Building Relationships that Last for Life! ›Get Involved!

Knowing who you are is a crucial step towards confidence and self-determination. Self-determination is a combination of skills, knowledge, and beliefs that enable a person to engage in goal-directed, self-regulated, independent behavior. As students become self-determined, their understanding of themselves and their environment increases, which causes students to value their lives and their future. As they find value in themselves and gain confidence, they are empowered to advocate for their future.

Self-determined students become active participants in their Individual Education Plan (IEP). Self-Determined students:
  • Know about their disability
  • Understand their strengths & weaknesses, likes & dislikes
  • Know what appropriate accommodations are
  • Have increased self-confidence
  • Have the ability to advocate for themselves
As students become more self-determined, school completion becomes an intrinsic motivation associated with:
  • Better performance, lower dropout
  • School engagement
  • High quality learning
  • Increased success in the general curriculum
  • Better teacher outcomes
In order for students to grow in self-determination it is crucial that instructors are trained in the principles of self determination.
